The “sentiero del Monte Meleto” (the Trail of Monte Meleto) extends for a length of 13 km and has an difference in altitude of 588 meters; approximate walking time: 5 h.
Along the path you will pass five diffrent old little hamlets. Called borgo in Italian. They are up to 450 years old.
Point of departure is the locality Vernano, where the ancient church of San Benedetto is located, a religious monument dating from the twelfth century. Close to the church you will see two high oaks (Quercus pubescens), monumental works of nature. The highest is 17 meters with a trunk circumference of 3.9 meters. In Sogliano oak trees are often associated with churches; this is surely an expression of a design and not the result of some randomness. Thanks to its shape the oak represents the communication between three worlds: the fathomless depths pierced by its roots, the surface of the earth and the endless sky with its constellations, towards which it reaches out with its branches.

From Vernano you move towards the hamlets Ca’Domenicino and le Cossure. Casa Calénc has two famous dutch holiday apartments (listed in the top 5 on Zoover). Out of more than 4000 apartments in Italy. Casa Calénc is situated on your right when you pass le Cossure. Taking the Path no. 111 and 111c, through a little forest, characterized by the presence of chestnuts, beeches, hornbeams and locust trees. Following the path you will pass through too Meleto di Sopra and its 400 years old little church The ancient oratory is dedicated to Santa Maria. On the 15 of august a mass is held in the open. Followed by a little festa.
Monte Meleto is the highest hill of Sogliano territory (620 m); There is a monument dedicated to the memory of the German pilots that met their end in this area in 1944. One of the very few monuments remaining.
You also can go treasure hunting because a geocache is hidden in this area.
Leaving behind Monte Meleto you cross a beech forest (Fagus sylvatica) from which the Fosso di Villa Uso river, a tributary of the Savio river, has its sources.

Walking along the paths 111a and 111 you cross the Rio Montegelli, you pass on a beautiful crest that offers gorgeous views of the Uso valley and you enter into the naturalistic oasis of Montetiffi, until you reach Vernano.
